hello :) i'm astro (hoonis works too), i'm the being who designed this website's flesh. i'm 20 years old, fresh out of high school and finally getting back on the indie web road after being parked on the side for a good while. i've been into html/css for around 3 years now, give or take. i'm entirely self taught, and it's been wild to watch my skills develop.

i'll save the code indie web etc babble for my eventual 'manifesto' or whatever you'd like to call it, this page is about me. Me. Uhh... yeah. it's hard to know about her sometimes. i'm an average netizen; i go on my puter, i play video jame, i surf da net, i doomscroll da feed, i make post and write thing and add imag. Hours of this every day? fuck yes!!!!!!!!!

i'm vehemently queer; i've identified that way for a while, and it's probably pretty damn obvious once you take a good look around here. the way i label myself is everchanging, and i wouldn't have it any other way. you can find where things sit now in that fun little table over there.

i also identify as nonhuman - specifically fictionkin - pretty openly, and that's essential to me as an individual as well. fittingly, the two pagedolls this page alternates between are two primary ways i exist, being hoonis boogie and astro novalite. i'm an autist (act surprised) and am cursed with two god awful special interests, those being the pink city (youtube series) and... dandy's world. the pink city isn't objectively awful; it just hasn't been updated in 4 years, and having a dead series with little to no accessible lore (as of now) impact my life both pertpetually and permanently should be considered a form of self harm.

dandy's world sucks to anyone over the age of 20. even ignoring the decidedly turbulent past it's had. i don't care, i love this shit. this is baby dead by daylight. i have every single character mastered (exclusive holiday ones included, waxwell not), every single skin, every single unlockable item, every single fuckass creepypasta dot exe monster fully researched. i have, like, 45k in game currency unspent that i didn't pay-to-win or anything. because i already fucking HAVE EVERYTHING. WHAT DO I BUY?

1. Please introduce yourself.

hello c: i'm astro! or azzy. or hoonis. or battat... or just bat... or...

2. How long have you been making websites?

since mid 2022! that's on a technicality, though: i was coming off of carrd pro (unfortunately) and had no idea what the fuck i was doing and gave up halfway through. the first ever iteration of my website, confettiguts, went up early 2023.

3. And what got you into the hobby?

Ah. Yeah. afformentioned carrd pro. carrd pro unlocking the ability to use your own html and css got me into browsing the indie web for graphics and code snippets, which led me into exploring the average personal website. shrines, blog, art, etc.

4. What kind of website are you most interested in?

i'm always drawn to sites built by beings like me. queer, alterhuman (SPECIFICALLY fictionkind), plural folk. bonus if they've got some unique stuff i haven't seen anywhere else before (fab's tarot corner comes to mind), or some really neat projects on display.

5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?

Yeah i usually just rawdog it. sometimes i have a very specific idea in my head, which can be... any amount of complete. from an entire page to just one part of it. and i go from there. other times i just go at it until something i like comes out.

6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.

THAT'S A DIFFICULT QUESTION... i've had so many sources of inspiration throughout the years but my friend nephro @ feelingmachine has remained pretty high up there. coolest waifufag i know

7. What's your favourite part about making websites?

it's a generic answer, but i like being able to put myself out there in whichever way i choose. i am quite literally only limited by my own ability and imagination. novalite is the most explicit and thought-out culmination of my identity yet, and i love it very much.

8. And the thing you struggle with the most?

Actually finishing my shit is my biggest hurdle now. this site remains incomplete and probably will be for a while whereas i had v1 of confettiguts done in, like, a week. after html and css finally clicked for me. I don't know how the fuck i did that. i kinda struggle with writing stuff, too.

9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?

vaguely same-y! i've got a global stylesheet set up for the window-like containers i use across pages and the float animation but other than that i try to spice the layout up a little per page.

10. How confident are you with CSS?

i'd say pretty confident. i can't pull animations out of my ass yet, but... most of the rules i can. i have to look up a few things sometimes but other than that Yeah! i'm p good c:

11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?

all that big talk just for me to say No. I have never seen this tag before in my life. not in my web design course or in my time browsing w3schools. lol

12. What is your favourite HTML element?

i've come to really appreciate <em> like yes i'm putting so much emphasis on this word listen to the tone you're reading this innnnuhhhhhh

13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?

import my afformentioned global stylesheet and my script to delay the floating of each container on the page so they're all slightly out of sync

14. Do you know JavaScript?

a little bit! i took a course in highschool and have taught a bit to myself as well

15. How about PHP?

Nope! i wanna look into learning though. especially because i've recently been browsing fanlistings and stuff

16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?

sure does! my pretty little shimmery galaxy...

17. Are you more focused on content or design?

definitely design i feel like. though i go through phases of being big into content. i'm still writing that endacopia thing. i should work on that... but i'm doing this instead.

18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?

i do! novalite.rest... i had an original pick but i can't remember what it was. i didn't get it because namecheap is greedy and wanted a bunch for it.

19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?

fine. i think. i dunno... i'd be lying if i said i wasn't a bit of a stuck-up hypocrite sometimes. i indulge in retroslop myself. so i can't be too judgey. sometimes they're really cool, too.

20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?

it is now! definitely didn't use to be. i've considerably improved my html cleanliness and organization. i don't know how i even functioned before.

21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?

buttons are so super cool that's a good retroslop. To Me. banners are too! i love collecting buttons for the cool sites that i find across the web. there are limits, though. anyone remember federiefeferi or whatever. It definitely wasn't feferi that's a homestuck character

22. What do you think of button walls in particular?

i have one myself! one day, i'd like to make a little blurb for each of the sites on there. very autistic. i'd have a lot of fun doing it

23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?

probably pretty similar. i'm really happy with what i've got here...

24. Are you envious of other people's websites?

occasionally. but i always remember that my style works the way it does because of its features... yanno? i envy the larger (literally) websites sometimes because they have so much space on each page to talk and put stuff and add graphics. or i envy the sites with the super boxy bitmap pixel art style because it just looks cool. but novalite looks the way it does because of the compact style and the round soft edges... it's very me!

26. Why do you use that one?

because it's. The one i use. (said very autistically). listen man i looked into codium but it was late and i couldn't parse anything it was saying. it took me 2 years to switch from notepad++ anyway. i'm stuck here for a while.

27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?

my web server, save for gif and song of the week. those are the only filetypes i worry will eventually really start to build up, so

28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?

there's a Debate? i get what you mean obviously im kidding. idk nekoweb is. Fine. i'm just not a fan of closed source because i'm hyperparanoid, and also just Idk. vibe over there is specific and particular. in a way i don't love. also... i built everything over here! neocities is my home! i have a site mirror on nekoweb, it's a fine host, just prefer to stick over here.

29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?

whew. i hope not much? i don't upload anything Super unoptimized, so... let's check my localized version actually. as of august 24th, 2026, 300mb. most of that's probably images

30. Do you keep local backups of your files?

HEY! i just answered this question basiclally. yeah. everything gets completed offline before it goes on-site.

31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?

i think a healthy middle is the best, but i love having things to look at. i'm a little baby i need my picturebooks. i do tend to click off sites that use purely graphical navigation, though... sorry... just a personal thing

32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?

oh most definitely. blue and yellow, all kinds of shades, always. it's on purpose but i'd probably do it subconsciously too.

33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?

yeah a few times. mostly because sometimes the paranoia gets really fucking bad. i try my hardest to scrub anything that could even possibly allude to my exact location off the site. i use vpns. etc. but i know how to be internet cautious, i need to remind myself of that.

34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?

nephro's the only friend i've got who i think is actively into webdev. some of my other friends have poked around it before but haven't continued. honestly, because i'm autistic, i feel weirdly attacked whenever anyone in my direct friend circle who Wasn't into it before gets into that sort of thing. i know it's stupid. i'm just territorial. I'M the personal site haver...... :c........

35. Do people in your real life know about your website?

yeah, i think my mom does... i don't know. i don't think she knows the exact url. that's good. full respect mom i don't need you browsing on here

36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?

in quick bursts, most of the time. i'm in one of those quick bursts as i write this. this just comes with being disabled unfortunately. not much time for the hobbies i love, my body dictates when and where.

37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?

not typically? any changes tend to be pretty slow. i haven't mixed up the way i've done pages for a while now. i have my ways of formatting and i stick to them.

38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?

i'd say a blend of all 3, with a bit of weight towards me-focused. i've got 3 shrines and a graphics page on my site right now, a bunch about my hobbies and a lot MORE about me.

39. Do you do web design professionally?

not right now!

40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?

i would love to... web design comes very naturally to me. but idk... sometimes folks talk about how doing a hobby for work can ruin it for you. i hope not. i would like to go into a computer-related field, though. not beating any stereotypes here i fear

not often. just for webrings and fanlistings and the like

42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?

sooort of? right now you could say that i do. i used to list some of mine on my site but i don't anymore. i dunno if it'll ever come back. i do have a few, though. i talk about my site on my tumblr and my twitter.

43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?

discord because i'm a Gamer. Heh!

44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?

i can't do anything without some sort of background noise, so of course i do. my favorite music genre is probably hyperpop, so a lot of that. i also tend to gravitate to my 2000s-2010s web playlist because it's very on-theme in my head.

45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?

everything goes on novalite! i've toyed with the idea of multiple sites before, but idk. seems like a lot to maintain. maybe one day.

46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?

47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?

the appeal of novalite is that it's 100% real unfiltered astro, actually. this is the Real Me.

sort of? i've bonded over web dev but haven't met someone through my site or neocities or the indie web in general yet.

most of the time? most. sometimes.

50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?

whew boy. let's get real opinionated. we'll go from least to most spicy

1. 90% of the time, sharing hyper-personal info. i am referring specifically to things that can be used to estimate your location. also maybe think twice about posting about being at public events, especially if they're smaller. because i'm so scared of this sort of thing i Also refuse to share my face or pictures of my outfits and body. i don't even share detailed pictures of my room on here.
2. i pinch the bridge of my nose whenever i see code copy/pastes on the indieweb. not templates, i mean people paying up the ass to export code off of shitty "website" builders like carrd and putting it up instead of doing the work themselves. and god damn do i have the right to speak on this because I ALMOST DID IT. and i'm thankful i was barred from it at the time because i uploaded the files wrong and i was too dumb to figure out how to do it right. do not do that shit it defeats the entire point of the indie web. at least with a template it's still hand-coded work that you're modifying with your own htmlcss knowledge.
3. use a color contrast checker before you decide on a color palette for the love of all that is holy and also my poor semi-sighted self. if its white on baby blue i'm kicking you
4. for the love of god take the "dni" off of your site. a website is not a rentry or a carrd or a strawpage or a mini little "about me!" you link on your social media so people can learn more about you with a few quick paragraphs. it's a website on the internet that Everyone can access and will access regardless of the meaningless groups you tell to go away on the landing. that just comes with the hobby, man. you can't block people from looking at your website and curate your viewers. it doesn't work like that and it speaks really loudly to the frankly kind of obnoxious parts of the internet you come from
5. if i have to zoom in to fix how your website looks, then you coded it unintuitively. i wrote something so obnoxiously haughty about this, like, 2 years ago. and it was annoying, and it's not accessible anymore. but the essence was also there. and i was right that it is decidedly fucking tiring to be told to zoom in ten, twenty, thirty percent or just "until things look right!" on half the sites i browse. because yeah sometimes that works but i'm willing to bet - if this is happening so much that you have to put a whole warning on your site about it - that your resolution isn't exactly common, and that means on some other screens it Won't look right. no matter how much you zoom in.
   
   because i'm not an asshat here's the biggest, easiest fixes i've found for this: work in em, not in px. px is fine for borders and text shadow and whatever else, but em scales with the font size which is typically consistent across every browser and every device. if you want shit floating everywhere graphics headings whatever then make sure the parent container has a position applied (even if it's just relative) and that it's IN the parent container closest to it. it'll stop whatever element that's on top of or nearby the parent from scaling to the body instead and you'll stop positioning shit based on the dynamic width of someone's monitor which is what makes your animu pagedoll sit in the center of the website on your granny's macintosh instead of on the side like it's supposed to.

51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?

basically just mentioned it but work in em please it's so much easier that way. use rem, too. and vw and vh. out with px you're only ever useful for borders

52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?

i try to, though i am very generic as well.

53. Do you consider different browsers?

more than i used to. i make sure my stuff looks good on firefox, at the very least. because i am unfortunately a user of chrome

54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.

linux seems cool and useable but once again sunk cost fallacy. stereotype actually subverted. if you're subjecting yourself to windows please use rufus and get all that dogshit off your boot before you install it

i'm working on it! a good chunk of the pages are right now, and i aim to have all of them browsable eventually. full honesty, i mostly do it for my partner, PC. he is the biggest ipad baby i know.

58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?

fucking annoying dear god i'm sorry. i can say that because once again I USED TO BE ONE OF THEM. CUT THIS SHIT THE FUCK OFF I WILL MUTE YOUR SITE AND YOU GET NO AUDIO AT ALL

mentioned it a bit ago, but i have 3! buddy simulator 1984, wonderlands x showtime and neon white. i like hearing about why exactly this individual loves whatever it is enough to make a shrine for one, and if it's something like a video game or hobby their "stats". what are your rarest achievements. what's the biggest thing you've made or accomplished. so so fun to read about. i suppose im striving for that. to make something i love and that others might, too...

i am! i design some of my assets, namely pagedolls. but i love graphic hunting too much to make EVERYTHING myself. plus that's a lot of work for disabled astro.

i frequent rentry.co/mode a lot. not hotlinked because rentry as a host are israelites and you might not have an adblocker. honestly most of the time i just rawdog it on tumblr by searching "web graphics" or something similar.

don't really think this counts but no matter what that damn left sidebar navigation is consistent across my site always. there was only one period where it wasn't and it was the end of confettiguts

66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?

USE EMMMMMM USE EMMMMMMM STAY AWAY FROM PIXELS LIKE THEY'RE DISEASED mostly kidding. i've said that so many times now. you need to start small or you will start ripping your hair out. don't jump straight into external stylesheets like 7.css even though the le retro is appealing. keep it simple and expand upon that

67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?

i used to just hard-code css whenever and it was a whole mess so then i went full "i must never use inline css or i die" but now i think i've found a healthy medium. inline css for manual positioning for several different absolute elements with the same class or similar cases and stylesheets for the rest

68. What do you think of frameset layouts?

i. Had to google what that was. i learned in html5 i'm oldweb larps. i've seen them before but didn't know there was a difference. they're chill

69. How about table-based layouts?

i used to use grid so that's my cousin basically. all the power to ya

70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?

yeah they're pretty basic concepts. i guess you could catagorize my homepage into 3-column but everything else differs page-to-page

oh it's a tossup. most of the time it's css because i spend a bunch of time tweaking animations until they look nice and adding other random shit. other times it's html because i keep writing and writing and writing and

oh yeah, sometimes! most of the time it's when i'm being a picky little nerd and using my web extension to turn off some part of their site... sorry... that blinking glowing text is really cool but it's tanking my fps

i'm alllll self-taught, baby! i mentioned having taken a few html courses in school but i knew. all of the content in those. it was more like free credits. i did learn js in school, though.

yeah sometimes. i just be using <span> for random bullshit

simply olive, the typeface i use across my entire site.

I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS WHEN I ANSWERED THAT "OTHER WEBSITES" QUESTION. i think it would be a lot of fun!! whether it was just editing whatever and attributing the edits to ourselves or having two sides of the same site or something like that. idk anyone who's big enough into webdev rn to wanna do that with me though...

yeah! it's a good timekiller for sure. i've found some really neat sites that way

i do, i do. usually it's to add their button or a link to their site to mine later. i'd feel... very flattered if i was in someone's bookmarks bar... such an intimate place... (^///^) (read: silly)

honestly, probably the color palette and the patterns and the aesthetic in general. when folks write in my guestbook talking about how pretty it is i fistpump to myself...

i'm interested in technology in a perverted way. partially kidding. i have a very sexy tapedeck and stereo. my dual-channel girlfriends and yes they have super bass

i know some python and c# but i've yet to make anything large-scale specifically for novalite. i wanna utilize theme-switching and add a toggle for the floating on my pages though eventually

90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?

WOMPPPPP WOMP WOMP WOMP let's blow up wix and carrd and whatever other slop. in ACTUALITY they're fine, for their specific use cases. just don't host your slop on the indieweb or try to fit in with us i do laugh at you if your strawpage is trying to mimic a classic 3 column layout, or it has a "webmaster" page or a shrines section or something i'm sorry. i have a right to do that because i did it too

91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?

i used to! not for any important reason, just because i thought "you are the ___ visitor" filled a nice space on my homepage

when i joined my first modern forum the welcome was decidedly cold. very active forum too btw. that turned me off for a while but i recently joined nonhuman national park! i've browsed it a little

directly into the editor most of the time. sometimes i write it in notepad or in my notes app, if i'm on the go.

94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?

SOMETIMES. sometimes. i don't feel like it fits, though. astro novalite doesn't exactly come to mind when you think of "cool", and if she does... uhh... you're probably 13. and shouldn't be on this site

95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?

WHEW wow yeah. a little bit. i mentioned it earlier, but jesus that haughty ass crybaby fit about badly coded sites. i think there was also another one i had in a different writing or maybe it was the same one. either way jesus astro that was annoying. i had to get rid of it. i also got rid of this one other waifuist thing exclusively on the account of "would i be ok with the creator of my waifu finding this because she Is online. and this character Is niche." and went hm no. and that was that

96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?

i'd leave it up i think!! the only reason confettiguts is gone is because it was depricated and almost all the content that was on there is on here now, save for my old blog entries.

97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?

oh hey i also kinda talked about this. i think both, honestly. i reveal a lot of deeply personal stuff about me but i also... don't. it's more like i don't reveal what's Literally personal. like my location or the body i puppet or whatever.

98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?

my best ONLINE friend? okay, well it's not kilo, because unfortunately they spend a good amount of their time freeloading at my house and sleeping in my bed. kidding. on the latter, at least. PC is my partner so that also doesn't count probably. in that case, i think it would be my friend nicole. i've known her for 5 years now and she just really gets me. we have very similar senses of humor. i take language from her a lot. she's why i say y'all so much when i text. she's also shelly, which makes a lot of sense. she doesn't have a site, unfortunately!

99. And do you optimise the images on your website?

when i need to, yeah. i don't optimize anything under, like, 5mb though.

fine, i suppose! sometime during this, spotify started autoplaying 2000s music and i just let it go. felt oddly fitting. after reading a few other webmasters' answers to these, i wanted to do my own. and now it'll go on my webmaster page, probably!
